PDP northern support group endorses Goodluck Jonathan for 2027 election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has officially endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election. The group made the announcement after its 8th meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, which took place between Wednesday and Thursday.
This endorsement signals a significant move within the PDP as the party prepares to rebuild and strategize for the upcoming general elections in Nigeria. The Northern Support Group, which represents PDP loyalists and support factions from all 19 northern states, believes that Jonathan is the most suitable candidate to unify the party and promote national cohesion.
Jonathan seen as key to party unity and national cohesion
In a communiqué jointly signed by the group’s Northern Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, and North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Narayi, the group stressed that Goodluck Jonathan remains the best option to restore party unity and foster peace ahead of the 2027 elections. The communiqué highlighted Jonathan’s leadership qualities and his history of balancing regional interests as factors that make him the ideal candidate to bring the party together.
The Northern Support Group pointed out that Jonathan’s candidacy would help bridge existing divides within the party, especially as the PDP faces internal challenges and factional disagreements. The group expressed confidence that Jonathan’s experience as a former president would strengthen the party’s appeal across different regions, particularly in the northern states where PDP still enjoys substantial grassroots support.
Confidence in PDP leadership and call for discipline
The coalition also reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum. The group commended Damagum’s efforts in facilitating reconciliation and fostering unity among party members. They believe that his leadership is critical in steering the party toward a stronger and more united front ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the Northern Support Group did not shy away from calling for stricter disciplinary measures within the party. They urged Chairman Damagum to take decisive action against members involved in anti-party activities. The communiqué accused some party leaders of undermining reconciliation efforts and allegedly collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the PDP from within.
This call for discipline underlines the group’s commitment to rooting out bad actors and ensuring that the party remains focused on its goal of reclaiming political power.
Addressing concerns over Jonathan’s eligibility
The group also addressed concerns raised about Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again for the presidency. Some critics have questioned whether Jonathan meets the legal requirements to run for office in 2027, but the Northern Support Group dismissed such concerns as already resolved.
They stressed that these eligibility questions should not be used as distractions or tools to divide the party at a crucial time. Instead, they urged all party members and supporters to rally behind Jonathan and focus on rebuilding the party’s strength and unity.
A call for unity and renewed focus on grassroots support
Throughout the communiqué, the PDP Northern Support Group emphasized the need for unity within the party. They reaffirmed that the PDP continues to enjoy significant grassroots support in the northern region, a factor that could be decisive in the upcoming elections.
The group called on all members to set aside differences and work together toward rebuilding the party’s structure and political machinery. They believe that with collective effort and a clear vision, the PDP can reclaim power at both national and state levels in the 2027 elections.
Looking ahead to 2027: A strategic path for PDP
As the 2027 elections approach, the PDP Northern Support Group’s endorsement of Goodluck Jonathan sends a strong message about the party’s direction and priorities. The group’s focus on unity, discipline, and grassroots mobilization reflects an understanding of the political challenges Nigeria faces.
By backing a candidate with proven leadership experience and a track record of national service, the PDP hopes to position itself as a credible alternative to the ruling APC government. The Northern Support Group’s stance will likely influence other factions within the party as they strategize for a successful campaign.
With political tensions rising and Nigerians eager for change, the PDP’s ability to present a united front and rally its supporters will be crucial to its electoral success in 2027.
