PDP national convention to hold Saturday, organising committee reaffirms schedule

Party leadership dismisses rumours of postponement

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed that its much-anticipated national convention will go ahead as scheduled this Saturday, dismissing rumours of a possible postponement.

The clarification was issued by the party’s National Organising Committee, which stated that all preparations for the event had been concluded and that delegates across the country had been duly accredited for participation.

In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, the committee maintained that the convention remains a vital step in strengthening the PDP’s internal democracy and preparing the party for upcoming electoral challenges at both state and national levels.

Committee confirms logistics and security readiness

The statement, signed by the Secretary of the National Organising Committee, Hon. Austin Akobundu, assured party members that necessary logistics, security, and welfare arrangements had been finalized.

“The National Organising Committee wishes to reaffirm that the 2025 PDP National Convention will hold as earlier announced. All subcommittees have completed their assigned tasks, and delegates are expected to arrive at the venue from Thursday,” the statement read.

Akobundu added that the party’s leadership had worked closely with security agencies to ensure a smooth and peaceful convention. “We have received firm assurances of adequate security coverage before, during, and after the event,” he said.

He further explained that the convention would provide an opportunity for the party to review its policies, evaluate its performance in recent elections, and elect new members into key national offices in accordance with its constitution.

PDP leaders, governors expected to attend

The event, which will take place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, is expected to draw the attendance of prominent PDP leaders, including former presidents, governors, members of the National Assembly, and key stakeholders from across Nigeria.

According to Akobundu, the convention will not only reaffirm the unity of the party but also signal the PDP’s readiness to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections.

He said: “This convention is not just a procedural gathering—it is a demonstration of the PDP’s commitment to democracy, inclusion, and accountability. Our goal is to emerge stronger and more united as we prepare to rescue Nigeria from its current socio-economic challenges.”

Party urges members to disregard misinformation

Reacting to speculations that the convention might be shifted due to alleged internal disputes, the committee described such claims as “false and mischievous.”

“Those spreading rumours of postponement are either misinformed or deliberately seeking to cause confusion. The date remains unchanged, and all accredited delegates are expected to attend,” the committee emphasized.

Party officials also noted that reconciliation efforts are ongoing to ensure all factions and aggrieved members participate fully in the exercise.

Eyes on the future as PDP sets reform agenda

Political analysts say the convention will likely shape the PDP’s strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. Key topics expected to dominate discussions include youth inclusion, women’s participation, and electoral reforms.

A top PDP chieftain, who spoke anonymously, noted that the convention presents a chance for the party to “rebuild public trust” and reposition itself as a credible alternative to the current administration.

“The PDP has an opportunity to reconnect with Nigerians by demonstrating discipline, transparency, and unity. The convention must send a clear message that the party is ready to govern again,” the source said.

As preparations reach the final stage, all eyes are on the weekend gathering, which many believe could mark a defining moment for Nigeria’s main opposition party.
