PDP inaugurates caretaker committee in Delta amid massive turnout

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday inaugurated its Caretaker Committee in Delta State, with Prof. Sylvester Monye emerging as chairman, in an event that drew a massive turnout of party supporters in Asaba, the state capital.

The inauguration, held at the OPAL Event Centre, attracted more than 2,000 attendees despite initial arrangements for about 1,000 guests, forcing organizers to bring in additional chairs as supporters overflowed the hall and surrounding areas.

The event marked a major resurgence for the PDP in Delta State following months of political uncertainty triggered by the defection of Governor Sheriff Francis Oborevwori and several party leaders to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Party leaders and speakers at the event hailed supporters for their loyalty, insisting that Delta State remains a PDP stronghold. They vowed that the party would reclaim its political dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that the PDP has never lost an election in the state.

Despite the unexpectedly large crowd, there was no provision for entertainment, refreshments, or financial inducements. Attendees, however, maintained order throughout the event and dispersed peacefully afterward.

The inauguration followed the decision of the PDP National Working Committee to set up caretaker committees in some states to manage party affairs amid internal crises and conflicting court rulings. Delta State was among the states affected by the intervention.

Before the inauguration, PDP activities in Delta had been largely dormant since April 2024, with party meetings suspended and structures weakened following high-profile defections to the APC.

The atmosphere at the event was energized by spontaneous chants and songs affirming loyalty to the PDP, reflecting renewed confidence among party faithful in the state.
