PDP crisis deepens as ex-campaign director blasts leadership over Wike, calls for total overhaul
On Tuesday, May 13, former Director of the PDP Presidential Campaign, Oladimeji Fabiyi, sharply criticized the current leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing them of irresponsibility and collusion with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an appearance on Arise News, Fabiyi said he has “totally lost confidence” in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), citing their failure to discipline members who openly sabotaged the party during the 2023 elections.
“The current NWC of the party has failed the party. I don’t have confidence in anything they do,” Fabiyi declared.
Wike controversy resurfaces
Fabiyi specifically pointed to former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who publicly admitted to working against the PDP in the 2023 presidential election, yet remains untouched by disciplinary measures.
“Everywhere, the majority opinion is that why Minister Wike has not been punished for coming out to admit that he worked against the party and still going to do that,” he said.
Wike, along with four other PDP governors, had backed APC candidate Bola Tinubu after a bitter fallout over the party’s presidential ticket, which was won by Atiku Abubakar.
Leadership and reconciliation failures
Fabiyi didn’t stop at Wike. He also criticized ongoing reconciliation efforts, particularly those involving Bukola Saraki, suggesting they lack sincerity and effectiveness.
“Reconciliation is a trend that Saraki has been on, but I have my reservations. When the North Central needed him most, he deserted them,” Fabiyi stated.
He argued that the party had failed to take clear and decisive action following its losses in the 2023 elections, including the presidential seat and several key states.
A call for total reform
According to Fabiyi, for the PDP to have a future, the entire party leadership must be removed.
“We have leadership that is not responsible… If you don’t tell yourself the truth, you can’t fix the problem.”
He also dismissed the recent PDP Governors’ Forum meeting, calling it a “gathering of compromise” rather than a platform for genuine strategy and reform.
What this means for the PDP
Fabiyi’s comments highlight growing internal dissent within the PDP, particularly from members who believe the party is drifting further from its founding principles. As calls grow louder for accountability and reform, the party faces mounting pressure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
