PDP blames FG for ignoring Kwara security warnings

Opposition party reacts to recent massacre in North Central

The Peoples Democratic Party has accused the Federal Government of negligence following a tragic massacre that recently occurred in Kwara State.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the opposition party alleged that security agencies had received multiple warnings about an impending attack but failed to take proactive measures. The PDP maintained that the sanctity of human life in Nigeria is being treated with levity by the current “Renewed Hope” administration.

The party expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims in the affected Kwara communities, describing the event as a tragedy that could have been avoided. According to the PDP, the persistent “clog in the wheel” of the national security architecture is the lack of coordination between the center and the states. They argued that the intelligence community must be held accountable for why such a large-scale movement of armed bandits went undetected.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the government’s “Renewed Hope” in the area of security appears to be nothing more than a “ritual of rhetoric.” He noted that the frequent mourning of citizens has become an unacceptable pattern that must stop immediately. The party called on the National Assembly to launch an independent inquiry into the security lapses that led to the Kwara massacre.

Demands for accountability in the security sector

The opposition is demanding a total overhaul of the security leadership, arguing that the current heads have exhausted their ideas. They pointed out that despite budgetary increases for defense, the rural communities remain vulnerable to marauding gunmen. The PDP suggested that security can only be restored through the establishment of state police and better border management.

The statement further highlighted that the instability is hurting agricultural productivity in Kwara State, which is a key hub for food production. Farmers are reportedly fleeing their ancestral lands, a move that will further exacerbate the food crisis. The PDP warned that the government cannot continue to look the other way while bandits operate with such brazen impunity.

Civil society groups join the call for justice

Several human rights organizations have joined the PDP in demanding justice for the people of Kwara. They argue that the sanctity of the constitution requires the government to protect all citizens, regardless of their location or political affiliation. These groups are planning a day of mourning to draw international attention to the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria’s North Central zone.

As February 2026 progresses, the focus remains on how the Tinubu administration will respond to these serious allegations of negligence. The Kwara massacre has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of the “Renewed Hope” security strategy. For the survivors, the only thing that matters is the guarantee that such a horror will never be repeated on their soil.
