Paul Scholes makes emotional Europa League final prediction despite United’s poor form

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has admitted there’s “no logical reason” for backing his former club to win the upcoming Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, given their poor domestic form — but he still believes the Red Devils will emerge victorious.

Speaking on The Overlap ahead of the highly anticipated final in Bilbao next week, Scholes acknowledged the grim reality both teams face: United and Spurs sit 16th and 17th respectively in the Premier League, making the Europa League their only route to Champions League qualification.

Despite Tottenham’s dominance over United this season, having won all three previous meetings, Scholes still placed his faith in a moment of brilliance from the Red Devils.

“Realistically they (Tottenham) should win it. They have beaten us in the last three games,” Scholes admitted.

“I think they will probably be the best team on the night, play really well — but we will win.”

“We seem to find 10 or 15 minute spells where we win games. I think that’s what will happen.”

Scholes’ comments reflect the emotional pull of former players for their clubs, even when current form suggests otherwise. Both teams’ poor league performances have made the May 22 showdown in Bilbao a high-stakes affair, with redemption and European football on the line.

While logic may favour Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, Scholes is backing Manchester United to find another improbable moment — one more twist in what’s been a turbulent season for both sides.
