Arsenal legend praises Amorim’s style — but doubts it suits Man United
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim would thrive at Chelsea — but is struggling at Old Trafford because the squad doesn’t fit his style.
Chelsea’s winning run under Maresca
Chelsea aren’t looking for a new manager right now. Since taking over from Mauricio Pochettino over a year ago, Enzo Maresca has led the Blues to impressive wins, including the FIFA Club World Cup and the Conference League, while bringing the team back to the Champions League.
Man United’s rough ride under Amorim
The story’s been very different at Manchester United. Since replacing Erik ten Hag, Amorim’s side finished 15th in the Premier League last season and lost 2-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
This season, United have earned just 31 points from 31 Premier League games, with only eight wins. Fans and pundits are speculating that Amorim might be shown the exit door after the club’s worst start since 1992-93.
Why Merson thinks Chelsea would be better
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said Amorim’s tactics would work well at Chelsea.
“He would have been a perfect fit for Chelsea,” Merson said.
“They’ve got world-class wing-backs in Reece James and Malo Gusto, they’ve got the best holding midfield player in the league in Moises Caicedo. It would fit the players.”
Merson added that United’s current squad doesn’t match Amorim’s style:
“You look at Man United and this system does not suit the squad they’ve got at all. The two wing-backs are nowhere near it, nowhere near good enough. No legs in midfield. Everything is up against him.”
