Panic as bomb explodes near Mogadishu Military barracks in Abuja

There is panic and apprehension in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, following a bomb explosion near Mogadishu Barracks in the territory on Monday

The incident reportedly left one person dead and another injured.

Sources said the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, contained in a rubber can.

Meanwhile, the FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the incident.

In a statement on Monday, the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the scene of the explosion that occurred along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass on Monday, May 26, 2025, at approximately 2:50PM has been cordoned off.

She said the blast prompted an immediate response from the police, who deployed officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, unit to the scene.

“One male victim was rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical attention. The police have commenced a comprehensive investigation, including forensic analysis, to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion.

“We urge members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear, as there is currently no cause for alarm,” Mrs Adeh said.

“Residents are also enjoined to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious persons, objects, or movements to the nearest police station”, the statement added.

Similarly, the headquarters of the Nigerian Army has also confirmed the explosion.

 In a post on its verified Facebook page – HQ Nigerian Army, the military said the explosion occurred at a bus stop opposite the cantonment.

“Explosion at Bus Stop Opposite Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja. Situation Under Control. Details Later,” the post read.
