Pan Igbo group urges calm ahead of 2027

A prominent Pan-Igbo socio-cultural organization has called on President Bola Tinubu to take proactive steps in promoting national calm as the 2027 general elections approach. The group expressed concerns over the early heating up of the polity and the potential for ethnic tensions to be exploited by desperate politicians. They believe that a stable and peaceful environment is essential for the conduct of a credible electoral process that reflects the will of all Nigerians.
Promoting inclusion and national unity
The group’s leadership emphasized that the President has a moral and constitutional duty to ensure that no part of the country feels marginalized in the build-up to the polls. They urged the administration to address the various security and economic grievances that are currently fueling dissatisfaction in the Southeast region. By promoting a sense of belonging for all ethnic groups, the President can de-escalate the growing political friction across the nation.
During their press conference in Enugu, the spokespersons for the group highlighted the need for a balanced approach to federal appointments and project distribution. They argued that when people feel represented in the government, they are less likely to fall for the divisive rhetoric of ethnic jingoists. The organization believes that the 2027 elections should be about ideas and track records rather than tribal sentiments or regional dominance.
Warning against the use of state apparatus
The pan-Igbo group also cautioned against the perceived use of security agencies to intimidate opposition figures or suppress dissenting voices in the region. They called for a neutral and transparent electoral umpire that can command the respect and confidence of all stakeholders. To achieve this, they suggested that the President should initiate a series of consultative meetings with leaders from all geopolitical zones to build a consensus on the rules of engagement.
They noted that the Southeast remains committed to the corporate existence of Nigeria but demands fairness, equity, and justice within the union. The group urged the youth in the region to remain law-abiding and not allow themselves to be used as pawns in the hands of political actors. They believe that the path to a better Nigeria lies in the ballots and not in the bullets of insurrection or the flames of ethnic hatred.
Building bridges across the Niger
As part of their efforts to promote peace, the organization is planning a series of inter-ethnic dialogues with other major groups like the Afenifere and the Arewa Consultative Forum. They believe that a united front among the traditional and cultural leadership can prevent the outbreak of pre-election violence. The goal is to create a national atmosphere where every Nigerian can campaign and vote in any part of the country without fear of harassment.
The President’s response to these calls will be closely watched by observers who are interested in the long-term stability of the Nigerian democracy. A commitment to a level playing field will go a long way in calming the nerves of those who are already preparing for a fierce electoral contest. For the pan-Igbo group, the survival of the nation’s democracy is more important than the victory of any individual candidate or political party.
