Oyo, Ogun, Lagos launch joint task force

South West states unite to flush out terrorists

The governments of Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos have officially launched a collaborative security initiative to combat the rising threat of terrorism and banditry across their borders.

This joint task force is designed to create a unified front against criminal elements that exploit the porous boundaries between the three neighboring states. The governors of the respective states announced the move following a high-level security summit aimed at protecting the economic heart of Nigeria.

According to reports from Vanguard Nigeria, the synergy became necessary due to the increasing frequency of kidnappings and attacks along major interstate corridors.

The initiative will involve a coordinated deployment of personnel from the Amotekun Corps and other state-backed security outfits. The primary objective is to conduct simultaneous raids on suspected hideouts and forest reserves used as bases by insurgents.

The leadership of the task force will revolve among the three states to ensure a balanced and effective command structure. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State emphasized that the security of one state is inextricably linked to the safety of its neighbors. He noted that the criminals often commit atrocities in one jurisdiction before fleeing into the thick forests of another to evade arrest.

Integrated intelligence sharing and surveillance

A major component of this new security architecture is the establishment of an integrated intelligence-sharing center. This facility will allow security agencies in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo to exchange real-time data on the movement of suspicious individuals and groups. By pooling resources, the states hope to eliminate the communication gaps that previously allowed terrorists to operate with relative impunity.

Reports from Daily Post indicate that the states are investing heavily in modern surveillance technology to monitor volatile border areas. This includes the deployment of drones and long-range cameras to provide aerial views of the vast forest terrains. The task force will also utilize specialized tracking equipment to intercept the communications of criminal syndicates operating in the region.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlighted that technology is the ultimate “force multiplier” in modern warfare against terror. He assured residents that the state is committed to providing the necessary funding for the maintenance of these sophisticated tools. The government believes that proactive monitoring will prevent attacks before they are even launched.

Patrols intensified on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which is the busiest road in the country, has been identified as a critical zone for the new task force. Personnel from the joint team will maintain a constant presence along the highway to protect commuters from highway robbers and kidnappers. This heightened security presence is expected to restore confidence in travelers during the festive season and beyond.

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, noted that the expressway serves as a vital artery for the national economy. He stated that the government will not allow “non-state actors” to disrupt the free flow of goods and people on such a strategic route. The task force has been mandated to set up rapid response teams at specific intervals along the road for immediate intervention.

According to Vanguard Nigeria, the joint patrols will also extend to the railway corridors and other alternative routes connecting the three states. The governors have urged the public to provide timely information to the security teams to aid their operations. A dedicated emergency hotline has been activated for citizens to report any suspicious activities within their communities.

Clearing forest hideouts and criminal dens

The joint task force has received strict orders to “flush out” terrorists from the various forests that straddle the border communities. These areas, including parts of the Old Oyo National Park and forest reserves in Ogun, have historically provided cover for illegal activities. The security teams will carry out “search and destroy” missions to dismantle any established camps or training grounds.

Reports from Daily Post suggest that the operation will also target the logistical networks that support these criminal groups. This includes identifying and arresting individuals who provide food, fuel, and information to the terrorists. The state governments have warned that any person found aiding criminals will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Traditional rulers and local community leaders have been engaged to support the clearing of these hideouts. Their local knowledge of the terrain is considered invaluable for navigating the complex topography of the rural areas. The FG has also been called upon to provide back-up support through the Nigeria Police Force and the military where necessary.

Ensuring long-term regional stability and safety

The launch of the task force is viewed as a long-term commitment to the stability of the South West region. The governors believe that a secure environment is a prerequisite for the “Renewed Hope” agenda of the federal government. By securing the region, the states aim to attract more foreign investments and promote local commerce.

The Federal Government has expressed its support for the sub-regional collaboration, viewing it as a model for other parts of the country. Security experts suggest that such horizontal cooperation is more effective than top-down directives in managing localized threats. The task force will undergo regular training to keep up with the evolving tactics of insurgent groups.

As 2025 draws to a close, the residents of the three states are hopeful that this initiative will bring a definitive end to the security challenges. The governors have promised to remain steadfast in their duty to protect the lives and property of the people. The joint task force remains on high alert, ready to respond to any threat that may arise across the region.
