The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has called for the immediate rescue of a primary school headmaster who was abducted by gunmen in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of the state.
The union identified the victim as Mr M.K. Owoade, the Headmaster of Nomadic Basic School, Ogodu, Igbojaye. He was reportedly kidnapped while working on his farm at about 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
In a statement issued on Monday, the union’s Chairman, Mr Fatai Hassan, and Secretary, Mr Salami Olukayode, said the incident was reported to the state leadership by its Itesiwaju Local Government branch.
The union described the abduction as disturbing, saying it reflects the growing security challenges facing teachers and other education workers across the country.
It appealed to the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, security agencies and other relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure the headmaster’s safe release.
The NUT also called for improved security in schools and surrounding communities to protect teachers and pupils.
The union expressed solidarity with Owoade’s family, colleagues and pupils, while praying for his safe return.
It further urged teachers across the state to remain vigilant in view of the prevailing security situation and prayed for the protection of all citizens.
