Ondo health workers threaten strike over government neglect
Nigeria’s healthcare sector is facing another crisis as the Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) issued a 15-day ultimatum to the state government, threatening an indefinite strike.
Citing years of neglect and discriminatory treatment, the union accused the government of prioritizing medical practitioners while ignoring the welfare of other healthcare workers. “Health workers are drained, exhausted, sick, and cannot afford routine regimens to sustain their health,” the NUAHP stated.
The union’s letter to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa highlighted the dire consequences of inaction. “How can we render adequate health services to patients in need when our needs are grossly neglected?” The NUAHP demanded improved working conditions, enhanced remuneration, and job satisfaction.
Signed by Chairman Comrade Elusoji Olumide and Secretary Comrade (Dr) Adeojo Michael, the letter expressed frustration over repeated pleas being ignored.
The government’s failure to address economic hardship, inflation, brain drain, and poor working conditions has led to despair and demoralization among healthcare workers.
If the ultimatum expires without action, the NUAHP will withdraw services from state hospitals, exacerbating the healthcare crisis. Patients relying on these hospitals will bear the brunt of the strike.
The NUAHP’s plight mirrors broader challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system, including brain drain, infrastructure deficits, and discriminatory management practices.
The union appealed to Governor Aiyedatiwa to intervene, saying, “Please save our souls, our dear governor! We anticipate your understanding and kind consideration.”
