Oluremi Tinubu harvests vegetables at Presidential Villa, renews home gardening campaign
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has harvested fresh vegetables from her home garden at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, renewing her appeal for Nigerians to embrace household farming to improve food security.
The harvest forms part of her Every Home A Garden initiative, which encourages families to grow vegetables at home.
Villa garden still producing after two years
According to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), the First Lady visited the vegetable garden on Monday for another harvest from the plot established about two years ago.
The garden continues to produce vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin.
After harvesting the produce, Tinubu shared part of the vegetables with members of her staff, urging Nigerians to cultivate the habit of giving to others.
Initiative aimed at boosting food security
Tinubu launched the Presidential Villa vegetable garden in July 2024 under her Renewed Hope Initiative as part of efforts to encourage household farming amid rising food prices.
The programme also introduced the Every Home A Garden competition, designed to encourage women and families across Nigeria to cultivate vegetables in their homes.
At the launch, the First Lady said even small household spaces could be used to grow nutritious food while reducing feeding costs.
The garden initially featured crops including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, scent leaf, ewedu, okra and lemongrass, and has remained part of her advocacy for food security, healthy living and environmental sustainability.
