Obi says he has no objection to the release of his academic records

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi has said he has no objection to the release of his academic records after reports that a legal action is seeking certified true copies of his certificates and other education documents.

In a statement on X on Tuesday, Obi said he had consented to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, releasing his records and official papers on his admission and studies, within the law. The reports concern a request for his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and related files.

“I wish to state clearly that I have absolutely no objection to the release of these records. I respectfully request that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, within the limits permitted by law, make available, upon legitimate request, my academic certificates, records, and other official documents relating to my admission and studies at the University. I equally have no objection to other educational institutions, within and outside Nigeria, which I attended, making my academic records available in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.”

He said he welcomed fair, lawful scrutiny of anyone seeking public office and that the same standard should apply to every presidential candidate. “As a presidential candidate seeking the trust of Nigerians to lead our country, I welcome legitimate public interest in my background, qualifications, and record.” He framed openness not as an attack but as a way to rebuild confidence, and challenged rivals to publish their own qualifications.

A consent letter is not the same as a set of documents already on a website. Obi has told the university it may release what the law allows if a proper request is made. Whether certified copies then appear, and how quickly, depends on UNN and on whoever filed the suit.

His challenge to other candidates turns a personal file into a campaign test: if scrutiny is a virtue, it cannot stop at one name. Until others answer, or until the papers themselves are public, the statement is a permission slip and a political invitation—not yet a dossier.
