Obi and Oyegun survive attack in Benin City

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Benin City. The attack occurred near the residence of Chief Odigie-Oyegun shortly after a political event in the Edo State capital. Gunmen reportedly trailed the motorcade before opening fire on the vehicles and the estate entrance.
A troubling reflection of Nigerian democracy
Peter Obi described the incident as a disturbing sign of the deteriorating state of the nation’s democratic values. He spoke out against the use of violence and intimidation as tools for political engagement in the 21st century. The Labour Party leader noted that the bullet holes on the gate and vehicles are a testament to the intensity of the assault.
According to witnesses, the attackers followed the group from the secretariat of the African Democratic Congress to the private residence. The assailants fired several shots, damaging official vehicles and causing panic in the quiet neighborhood. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the attack, although the psychological impact on those present was significant.
Security agencies launch a full investigation
The police authorities in Edo State have confirmed the incident and stated that they have reinforced security around the affected area. They are currently analyzing forensic evidence from the scene to identify the perpetrators of the failed assassination. No arrests have been made yet, but the authorities have promised to bring the hoodlums to justice.
Political leaders from various parties have condemned the attack, calling it a direct hit on the freedom of association. They argue that such acts of terrorism against citizens and political figures must not be allowed to continue. The African Democratic Congress leadership has also called for a total overhaul of the security measures provided for high-profile individuals.
Calls for peace and accountability
As the Edo State governorship elections approach, there are growing fears that political violence might escalate. Peter Obi has urged his supporters to remain calm and not to resort to any form of retaliation. He believes that the only way to save the country is through the ballot box and not through the barrel of a gun.
The international community has also expressed concern over the safety of political leaders in Nigeria. Many are calling for a more robust protection plan for those who are actively involved in the democratic process. The outcome of the police investigation will be closely watched by millions of Nigerians who are tired of political insecurity.
