NUPRC warns public against fake AI-generated employment letters, job fraudsters
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has warned the public against fake and AI-generated employment letters circulating in its name and against fraudsters demanding money in exchange for promised jobs at the commission.
The warning was issued in a statement by the Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, on X on Tuesday. The commission said it had received reports of fabricated employment letters bearing the names of persons unknown to the organisation. It also said criminal elements had been extorting money from unsuspecting people by claiming to have the connections needed to secure employment at the NUPRC.
The activities of the suspected fraudsters have been reported to law enforcement agencies for investigation. The commission urged the public to exercise caution and to verify any employment-related information before taking action or making payments.
“The NUPRC wishes to inform the general public about the proliferation of fake and AI-generated employment letters bearing the names of persons unknown to the Commission,” the statement said. It added that some individuals had been collecting money under the pretext of helping people obtain jobs.
The commission stated categorically that there is currently no recruitment exercise under way. When it does decide to recruit, the process will be conducted strictly in line with existing laws and government regulations. Job seekers were therefore advised to be wary of anyone requesting money or presenting questionable documents purporting to come from the NUPRC.
The warning reflects a recurring pattern in which the promise of public-sector employment is used to extract money from desperate applicants. The appearance of AI-generated letters adds a new layer of sophistication to the fraud. By stating clearly that no recruitment is ongoing and that future processes will follow official channels, the commission seeks to close the space in which such schemes operate. The practical defence remains verification before payment and reliance on formal announcements rather than private intermediaries.
