Physique hindered regular job opportunities
Popular Nollywood actor and broadcaster, Victor Nwaogu, better known as Nkubi, has opened up about the challenges he faced before finding fame.
The talented entertainer revealed that he was repeatedly denied “regular” jobs because of his physique and height. Despite having a university degree in Theatre Arts, many employers viewed him through a lens of limitation rather than capability.
Nkubi explained that his decision to go into acting was partly born out of necessity and the need to survive in a judgmental society. He found that the entertainment industry was the only place where his unique nature could be seen as an asset rather than a liability. However, even in Nollywood, he had to fight against being pigeonholed into “diminishing” roles that lacked depth.
Overcoming societal pressure and stereotypes
Growing up in the Mafoluku area of Oshodi, Nkubi learned early on how to be resilient and thick-skinned. He noted that the tough environment prepared him for the various shades and insults he would later encounter in the corporate world. Instead of letting the negativity pull him down, he used it as fuel to develop his skills as a broadcaster and skit-maker.
The actor noted that he has never had an issue with being referred to as a “dwarf” because it is a biological reality. What he objects to is the assumption that his height defines his intelligence or his professional worth. He has since become a household name, proving that talent and determination can overcome any physical barrier.
Success as a broadcaster and husband
Beyond the silver screen, Nkubi has built a successful career as an On-Air Personality (OAP), reaching millions of listeners daily. He believes that broadcasting allowed him to connect with people on an intellectual level before they even saw his face. His journey has inspired many other “little people” to chase their dreams and refuse to be sidelined by societal expectations.
Nkubi also spoke warmly about his personal life, particularly his marriage to his wife, Vivian. Their union was a major talking point on social media, with many praising them for looking beyond societal pressures. He credits his wife for being a strong pillar of support and for loving him unconditionally despite the “noise” from the public.
The future of inclusive entertainment
Nkubi is now focused on creating more structured content, including podcasts that discuss issues affecting people of his nature. He wants to use his platform to educate the public and promote a more inclusive environment for everyone. He believes that Nigeria is slowly changing, but there is still a long way to go in terms of workplace equality.
