NIS suspends immigration officer for extortion at airport
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended one of its officers, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II), for allegedly soliciting money from a traveler.
Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller General of NIS, announced the suspension in a statement released by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.
Nandap explained that the officer’s behavior, which was captured in a video circulating on social media, goes against the professionalism and ethics upheld by the NIS. She strongly condemned the act, stating that it undermines the ongoing reforms aimed at improving service standards.
The officer has been suspended indefinitely while disciplinary procedures are underway, in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules.
The video, titled “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” shows the officer soliciting money from a traveler. Nandap expressed that such behavior is unacceptable and not representative of the NIS’s commitment to hospitality and professionalism.
She reaffirmed the NIS’s commitment to rooting out corruption within its ranks and maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward unethical practices.
Additionally, Nandap mentioned that electronic gates (e-gates) are being installed at all international airports to make travel smoother and reduce incidents like the one involving the suspended officer.
She encouraged the public to report any misconduct or corruption by immigration officers to the appropriate authorities.
