Nigeria reports eight new cases of mpox in one week
In the week of October 7 to October 13, Nigeria recorded eight new cases of mpox, with no reported deaths in any of the 36 states or the Federal Capital Territory. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) shared this update on its website on Monday.
The confirmed cases came from several places: Plateau and Bauchi each reported two cases, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abia, and Delta each had one case.
The NCDC is actively coordinating the response to the mpox outbreak through its National Mpox Emergency Operation Center, working with different partners to ensure a thorough approach. This includes monitoring and reporting suspected and confirmed cases, offering guidance for treatment, raising public awareness, and collaborating with state governments and health agencies.
To report suspected cases, the public can contact the NCDC using its toll-free number. By using their resources and expertise, they aim to help stop the spread of mpox and keep Nigerians safe.
Mpox is an illness that usually starts with symptoms like fever, severe headaches, swollen lymph nodes, back pain, muscle pain, and extreme tiredness. This is followed by a distinctive rash that often begins on the face and can spread to other areas, including the soles of the feet and palms of the hands.
Since the beginning of this year’s outbreak, Nigeria has reported a total of 1,339 suspected cases and 102 confirmed cases. A total of 26 states and the FCT have seen at least one confirmed case, showing that the disease is spreading widely across the country.
