NGE, EU partner to train editors on combating fake news and misinformation

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), in collaboration with the European Union (EU), is holding a one-day training programme today, July 25, 2025, in Lagos to address the growing threat of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation in Nigeria’s media space.

According to a joint statement signed by NGE President Mr. Eze Anaba and General Secretary Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, the training is part of an effort to strengthen journalistic integrity by equipping editors and media executives with tools to combat the negative impact of false information on public trust and media credibility.

“The EU and the NGE will organize a one-day training programme for editors and media executives across different media platforms,” the statement read. “The objective is to equip editors with the necessary skills and knowledge to identify and debunk misinformation, fake news, and disinformation, while promoting accurate and trustworthy reporting.”

The Guild emphasized the urgency of the initiative, citing that the spread of fake news, particularly through social media and digital platforms, continues to threaten the credibility of the media and the stability of the country.

“It is common knowledge that editors play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of information published in their respective media organisations,” the Guild said. “However, recent experiences have shown that editors need the technical skills and training to effectively identify and counter misinformation.”

The training targets 50 editors from across print, broadcast, and online media platforms. The aim is to boost fact-checking capabilities, reinforce the discipline of verification, and enhance public access to reliable information that promotes informed decision-making and democratic accountability.

Key presentations will be delivered by Mr. Azu Isiekwene, Executive Vice Chairman/Editor-in-Chief of LEADERSHIP Newspapers, and Dr. David Ajikobi, Executive Director of Africa Check. Topics include:

  • Principles of fact-checking: Understanding the editor’s role in promoting accuracy, fairness, and transparency.

  • Identifying misinformation and disinformation: Analyzing real-life examples and trends.

  • Fact-checking tools and resources: Using modern tools to tackle complex scenarios.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, His Excellency Gautier Mignot, will officially declare the programme open with a brief address.

The NGE said it hopes the training will contribute meaningfully to raising professional standards in journalism and countering the rising tide of misinformation in Nigeria.
