Maresca tells Estêvão to ignore Lamine Yamal comparisons

Chelsea Head Coach Enzo Maresca has issued a strong cautionary note to his highly-rated teenage winger, Estêvão, urging the 18-year-old Brazilian to disregard media comparisons with his rival contemporary, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. Maresca’s advice came on the eve of a crucial Champions League fixture against Barcelona, where both young stars are expected to feature prominently.

The Italian manager emphasized that Estêvão, who has already made a significant impact since arriving at Stamford Bridge in July, must focus solely on his personal development rather than getting entangled in the pressure of surpassing other players. This guidance highlights the club’s commitment to protecting the prodigious talent from the intense scrutiny often placed on rising football stars.

Focus on self-improvement, not competition

During his pre-match press conference on Monday, Maresca was directly questioned on whether Spain international Yamal, who is only three months younger than Estêvão, represented a positive role model for the Brazilian winger. The coach swiftly diverted the focus away from a competitive comparison, stressing that Estêvão is already operating at an elite level.

“Estêvão is already playing at a high level, he is already in the starting eleven with Brazil,” Maresca told reporters. “For sure he is very young, he can do many things better, but we are very happy with him.”

The coach was emphatic that the path to greatness for any young player lies in consistency and internal drive, not external validation or rivalry. He advised Estêvão to “shut out the noise,” stating clearly: “He has not to think about being better than this player or the other player. He has just to be better than himself day by day. Try to work hard, improve.”

Estêvão has enjoyed a sensational start to his Chelsea career, netting nine goals for club and country since the summer, cementing his status as one of the most exciting young prospects in European football. Maresca affirmed his long-term importance to the club, saying: “He is going to be for sure an important player for this club. For the future, no doubt.” He added that the emergence of young talents like Estêvão, Yamal, and Barcelona midfielder Pedri is simply “the beauty of football.”

Palmer unavailable for Barca and Arsenal clashes

While preparing his young Brazilian star for the major continental clash, Maresca also provided a necessary but disappointing update on the fitness of another key forward, Cole Palmer. The English international, who has been instrumental to Chelsea’s attack, is set to miss the crucial Champions League fixture against Barcelona and the subsequent London Derby against Arsenal this coming weekend due to a toe injury.

Maresca confirmed that Palmer is currently wearing a protective boot, signifying the severity of the injury sustained in a home incident. “Cole is wearing a boot,” Maresca said. “We don’t know when he will be back but for sure it will be soon.” He offered a slight note of optimism, mentioning that Palmer is “already on the pitch, he’s already touching the ball and the feeling (for him) is good,” but his unavailability for the two high-profile matches is a major tactical headache for the Italian coach. This absence will place additional creative burden on the shoulders of the available attacking players, including the young Estêvão.

Maresca’s tactical philosophy influenced by Barcelona

Providing context to the upcoming match, Maresca also revealed that his own distinctive, possession-based tactical philosophy was fundamentally shaped by his admiration for Barcelona’s past dominance. He specifically cited the coaching tenure of Pep Guardiola, who led the club to two Champions League titles between 2008 and 2012.

“I decided to be a manager because of Pep’s team, Barcelona, years ago,” explained Maresca, highlighting the ideological grounding of his coaching style. He concluded that while every club can choose its preferred style, his commitment to a possession-centric, attacking brand of football remains unwavering: “I chose mine years ago and this will be the way I like to watch my team in football and also in the future.”

The match between Chelsea and Barcelona holds significant weight in the Champions League league phase, as both teams currently stand on seven points after four matches, making the result critical for their advancement prospects in the competition.
