Manchester City complete Enzo Fernández signing as Premier League window closes
Manchester City completed the signing of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández from Chelsea on Tuesday as the summer transfer window closed with a cluster of high-profile Premier League moves.
The 25-year-old joined City on a five-year contract until the summer of 2031. A 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América winner, he said he was eager to keep winning trophies under Enzo Maresca. “Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times. Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are. I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies.”
Director of Football Hugo Viana called him a complete midfielder—technically gifted, hardworking, tenacious and a goalscorer—and said two World Cup finals and major trophies at 25 spoke to his mentality. City, he added, believed Fernández would improve the team.
Elsewhere, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez joined Serie A side Como on a season-long loan after 112 appearances for the Blues since arriving from Brighton in 2023. Ukraine international Mykhailo Mudryk also left on a season-long loan to reunite with Roberto De Zerbi, saying he wanted to bring speed and creativity at both ends of the pitch. De Zerbi said he already knew what the winger could offer in one-against-one situations.
Belgian winger Malick Fofana joined Sunderland from Olympique Lyonnais on a long-term deal, the club’s fifth summer signing. Crystal Palace announced Netherlands international Quinten Timber on a contract until 2031 after spells at Marseille and Feyenoord. Jack Grealish returned to Everton on loan from City for the rest of 2026/27 after 20 Premier League appearances, two goals and six assists for the Toffees last season before a foot injury.
The window closed at midnight on Tuesday. Deals announced later would count only if the paperwork had been filed before the deadline. The night’s pattern was familiar: one club paying for a proven midfielder, others moving fringe or returning players on loan, and promoted or mid-table sides adding youth and experience before the market shut.
