Liverpool appoints Richard Hughes as Sporting Director

Liverpool has finally appointed Richard Hughes as their next Sporting Director, a role he will take as soon as the current season ends.

Hughes is currently AFC Bournemouth’s Sporting Director.

This announcement was made on Liverpool’s official X page in a post.

“We can confirm the appointment of Richard Hughes as the club’s new sporting director, a post he will take up at the end of the 2023-24 season,” the post said.

This appointment was facilitated by Liverpool’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Football Michael Edwards, who will also resume at the end of the current season.

Recall that it was hinted that Hughes will be targeted for the Sporting Director role at Liverpool, currently occupied by Joel Schmardtke.

Edwards, speaking on the appointment, said he had full faith in Hughes.

“I trust him completely.

“He has outstanding judgment and a track record of making smart decisions.

“He’s the right person to make the key decisions, offer the leadership to take us forward into a bright future,” Edwards said.

Hughes, speaking on the appointment, said how proud he was to have been given the opportunity.

“I am incredibly proud to be offered this opportunity. Liverpool is a unique club and I’m grateful to be given a chance to serve it in this capacity,” he said.
