Lagos Police Command deactivates IED in Ikeja, averts catastrophe ahead of August 1 protest
In a significant development, the Lagos State Police Command announced that its anti-bomb squad successfully deactivated an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Ikeja area of the state. This discovery came just hours before the planned commencement of a nationwide anti-government protest.
Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident but was unable to provide further details at the time of reporting.
The deactivation of the explosive device is particularly noteworthy given the tense atmosphere surrounding the planned 10-day nationwide protest, scheduled to begin on August 1.
The protest, organized by Nigerian youths, aims to draw attention to the country’s economic hardships. However, security agencies have issued warnings, urging the organizers to cancel the protest.
In a brief statement, Hundeyin simply acknowledged the incident, saying, “Yes, it happened today.” The swift action by the police anti-bomb squad has likely prevented a potentially dangerous situation, ensuring the safety of citizens in the area.
