Konga says Davido should have supported Nigerian music legends with birthday donations

Veteran singer Konga has criticized the current generation of Nigerian artists for failing to support industry legends.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, the Kabakaba crooner argued that superstar Davido should have used the N250 million raised for his 2021 birthday to support struggling music veterans instead of donating it to orphanages.
Davido had received N200 million from friends and fans and added N50 million of his own money, bringing the total to N250 million, which he donated to 292 orphanages across Nigeria. Konga suggested that redirecting the funds to legendary artists could have rejuvenated their careers and the industry as a whole.
“If I were part of Davido’s management, one time his friends contributed money to him, I would have said – ‘Davido, carry this money, go and give it to all these legends… bring Baba Fryo back, bring Daddy Showkey. Give Daddy Showkey, Baba Fryo and others N5 million each,’” Konga said.
He further criticized young artists for using peer pressure to push veteran musicians into menial jobs abroad, while downplaying the contributions of legends such as Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Majek Fashek, and others, who had already achieved international recognition.
“You guys are only taking it forward from where we stopped. Just because our achievements were not documented back then does not mean we did not do anything,” Konga added, stressing the need for humility and respect for the pioneers of Nigerian music.
