King Charles III announces reduction in Cancer treatment, urges early screening

Britain’s King Charles III has revealed that his cancer treatment will be reduced next year, offering a rare glimpse into his personal battle with the disease. In a filmed message for the national Stand Up To Cancer fundraising campaign, the 77-year-old monarch encouraged Britons to take advantage of available screening programmes.

“Thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to doctors’ orders, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the new year,” Charles said in the video shown on Channel 4. He added that early detection is key to transforming treatment journeys and giving patients hope.

Charles, who announced his cancer diagnosis in February 2024, did not disclose the type of cancer or specific treatments he is undergoing. He noted concern that at least nine million people in the UK are not up to date with cancer screenings, warning that many opportunities for early diagnosis are being missed.

The king highlighted that when bowel cancer is caught early, around nine in ten patients survive for at least five years, compared with one in ten when diagnosed late, though royal sources clarified that his own illness should not be assumed to be bowel cancer.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the king’s message on social media, emphasizing that early screening saves lives and expressing relief that Charles’s treatment will be scaled back.

The monarch’s openness about his health marks a departure from the secretive approach of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. The fundraising campaign has featured celebrity challenges and other events leading up to Friday’s televised show.
