Keyamo commissions reconstructed Port Harcourt airport road, flags off new bypass project

Port Harcourt Airport access is set for a major upgrade as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Thursday commissioned the newly reconstructed Port Harcourt Airport Road and officially flagged off work on the Bypass to the Airport and Toll Gate Project.

Keyamo, attending the ceremony at the invitation of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, described the road upgrade as a “transformational intervention” that restores dignity to one of the state’s most critical gateways. He emphasized that the former poor condition of the road had long posed challenges for travellers, airlines, and investors, and highlighted that the project aligns with the Federal Government’s agenda to improve aviation infrastructure nationwide.

Governor Fubara explained that the road and bypass upgrades were inspired by community demands after residents once blocked the airport access road in protest, halting commercial activities for a full day. The grievances included inadequate electricity, limited welfare services, and lack of local employment opportunities. He noted that two of the three demands restored electricity and a fully equipped health centre have already been addressed, while employment initiatives remain under review.

The new bypass and toll gate project, aimed at enhancing airport access and preventing future disruptions, is scheduled for completion within seven months. Both the federal and state governments reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration on safe, modern, and accessible airport facilities across Nigeria.
