Johnny Drille opens up about early struggles in music career
Popular Nigerian singer John Ighodaro, widely known as Johnny Drille, has shared insights into the challenges he faced before landing a recording deal. Known for his unique alternative musical style, Johnny Drille revealed that his journey to success was not without difficulties, especially when it came to securing a record deal that respected his artistic authenticity.
Speaking candidly in a recent episode of the CreativTea podcast, the singer recalled how he was pressured by two major record labels to alter his sound to fit more mainstream, commercial styles.
Pressure to change style from major labels
Johnny Drille explained that before signing with Mavin Records, he had discussions with other leading Nigerian labels who showed interest in signing him. However, these labels wanted him to “change his sound,” urging him to produce faster, more danceable tracks that would appeal to a broader audience.
He said, “There were two other major labels in Nigeria that wanted to sign me but the conversation was always around, ‘How do we change your sound? How do we make it faster? How do we make it danceable?’” Despite the pressure, Johnny Drille chose to stay true to his signature style, which blends folk, alternative, and soulful melodies.
Don Jazzy’s faith in Johnny Drille’s music
Johnny Drille praised Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy for taking a bold and unconventional step by signing him. Unlike other labels, Don Jazzy showed genuine appreciation for Johnny Drille’s music without insisting on commercial tweaks.
He said, “When I met Don Jazzy, there were no conversations like that. He was just really a fan of the music… that was a big risk to take, but he pulled it off.”
This move surprised many, as Mavin Records is widely known for its Afrobeats and pop acts, making Johnny Drille’s alternative style a unique addition to the label’s roster.
From Project Fame to Mavin Records
Johnny Drille first came into the spotlight in 2013 when he participated in the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa, a popular music talent show. Though he didn’t win, the show gave him a platform to showcase his talent.
He released his debut single, “Wait For Me,” in 2015, which helped establish him as a distinctive voice in the Nigerian music scene. In 2017, he joined Mavin Records, marking a new chapter in his career.
Debut album and rising popularity
Under Mavin Records, Johnny Drille released his debut album, Before We Fall Asleep, which was widely praised for its soulful lyrics and unique sound. The album solidified his position as one of Nigeria’s leading alternative artists.
