IPOB welcomes police statement, urges respect for citizens’ right to peaceful assembly

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has welcomed a recent statement by the Nigeria Police Force, urging authorities to protect citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
In a press release issued on Saturday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group described the tone of the police statement as measured and called for impartial enforcement of the law during public demonstrations.
IPOB said it supports peaceful and lawful advocacy, noting that the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign is a broad-based civic initiative supported by human rights and pro-democracy groups. The group clarified that while it supports the campaign’s objectives, it is not the organiser of the movement.
The group further appealed to security agencies to ensure the safety of demonstrators and to avoid any actions that could provoke tension. It also directed its members to remain calm, obey court orders, and refrain from any form of confrontation.
Expressing concern over the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB said the case has attracted significant public interest and urged the government to handle related matters transparently and in line with legal standards.
Concluding, the group reaffirmed its commitment to non-violence and lawful engagement, calling for peace and restraint from all sides.
