INEC cracks down on fake news ahead of Edo governorship election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified efforts to combat the spread of false information ahead of the upcoming Edo State governorship election, with measures in place to minimize the circulation of fake news.
INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this during a press conference in Abuja, emphasizing the crucial role of the media in shaping democracy.
He revealed that 122 organizations, totaling 892 personnel, were approved for accreditation after a careful review, although this number may reduce due to some organizations not completing the process.
Olumekun stressed that INEC is acutely aware of the dangers posed by fake and misleading news, especially during elections, which can disrupt the electoral process, undermine public confidence, and incite unnecessary tensions.
- He noted that the commission has taken proactive steps to combat this menace by being open and transparent in all its dealings.
“We have made it a culture to constantly update the public through you after every Commission’s meeting when decisions are taken,” Olumekun said. “We will intensify the information flow as we move closer to the Edo governorship election.”
The commission relies on the media to help combat fake news and maintain public confidence in the electoral process. A final report on accreditation and a detailed breakdown will be made public soon.
