Gunmen abduct nine worshippers in Benue

Terrorists strike during Catholic night vigil

In a heart-wrenching incident, suspected gunmen have abducted nine worshippers from Saint John’s Catholic Church in the Utonkon District of Ado Local Government Area.

The victims were participating in a night vigil on the church premises when the armed assailants stormed the area. The worshippers, who were unarmed and in deep prayer, were whisked away to an unknown destination under the cover of darkness.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction and initiated a massive search and rescue operation. Families of the victims are currently in a state of shock and trauma as they await news of their loved ones. This attack follows a disturbing pattern of violence targeting religious gatherings across the North-Central region of Nigeria.

Community leaders cry out for security

Emmanuel Udah, a former councillor in the area, described the incident as a planned and targeted crime against the Church. He lamented that the people of Utonkon no longer feel safe even in their most sacred places of worship. Udah called on the federal government to beef up security and prevent these continuous attacks that have paralyzed local communities.

The people of Benue State have faced years of insecurity, ranging from farmer-herder clashes to random acts of banditry. Many residents now feel a growing sense of abandonment by the authorities at all levels. They are demanding immediate action and permanent security posts in vulnerable rural districts to deter these heartless criminals.

Police deploy tactical units for rescue

The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical and operational units to the affected community. These teams are currently working alongside local vigilantes who have a better understanding of the difficult terrain. The police spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, assured the public that the command is on the trail of the perpetrators.

Security has been reinforced in neighboring communities to forestall any further attacks during this volatile period. The police are also calling on anyone with useful information to come forward and assist in the investigation. The goal is not just to rescue the nine worshippers but to bring the entire kidnap syndicate to justice.

The rising tide of religious persecution

This latest abduction has reignited the conversation about the safety of Christians in certain parts of Northern Nigeria. While the government often attributes these attacks to general banditry, many religious bodies see them as a form of targeted persecution. International human rights groups have been urged to speak out and stand with the suffering people of Benue.

Nigeria must find a lasting solution to the security crisis that is slowly tearing the social fabric of the nation apart. Protecting places of worship should be a top priority for any government that values freedom and human rights. Until these terrorists are met with decisive force, innocent citizens will continue to pay the price for systemic failure.
