Governor Fintiri insists on southern presidency

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has reaffirmed his stance that the Nigerian presidency should remain in the South in 2027. He argued that this move is necessary to maintain the delicate balance of power and ensure national unity across the federation. The Governor made these remarks during a political stakeholders’ meeting where the future of the ruling party was discussed.

Promoting equity and national integration

Fintiri noted that the principle of power rotation has been a stabilizing factor in Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999. He believes that moving the presidency back to the North so soon would be an act of bad faith that could alienate southern voters. For him, the survival of the country depends on the ability of its leaders to respect informal agreements on power sharing.

The Adamawa leader emphasized that the South has many capable individuals who can build on the current administration’s progress. He urged his northern colleagues to prioritize the long-term stability of the nation over regional political dominance. Fintiri’s position has sparked an intense debate within the People’s Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress.

Addressing the concerns of the northern electorate

While advocating for a southern candidate, Fintiri also acknowledged the legitimate concerns of northern residents regarding security and agriculture. He argued that a president from the South can effectively address these issues if they have a competent and inclusive cabinet. The Governor believes that good governance does not have a regional identity and can be delivered by any qualified Nigerian.

He challenged those pushing for a northern candidate to consider the optics of such a move in a multi-ethnic society. Fintiri warned that political greed often leads to civil unrest and the erosion of public trust in democratic institutions. He called for a consensus that puts the interests of the common man ahead of the ambitions of a few powerful politicians.

Preparing for the 2027 electoral cycle

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the conversation around zoning is expected to dominate the Nigerian political space. Fintiri’s bold stance as a northern governor gives more weight to the argument for a southern continuation. He has promised to continue his advocacy until a fair and equitable roadmap is established for the next general elections.

The Governor also used the platform to highlight the achievements of his administration in Adamawa State, particularly in infrastructure and education. He believes that his record of performance gives him the moral authority to speak on national issues of such importance. Nigerians are waiting to see if other northern governors will join him in this call for regional fairness.
