Global music icon Tems says she has exceeded all her career targets

Nigerian superstar confirms success beyond early expectations
Nigerian singer and global music sensation, Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has revealed that she has achieved far more than she ever set out to accomplish in the music industry.
The “Love Me Jeje” crooner made this candid disclosure during a recent interactive session with her dedicated fanbase on the social media platform, X. Her comments reflect a feeling of overwhelming success following a swift rise to international prominence.
The singer was responding to a fan’s question, which asked, “What are you currently looking forward to? Also would you say you’ve achieved all of your dreams prior to stardom?” Tems replied with humility and gratitude, stating that her focus is now on the future. She stated, “I’m looking forward to whatever the Lord has in store and honestly I’ve achieved beyond my dreams from when I had a 9-5.”
Tems’ meteoric rise from digital marketer to grammy winner
Tems launched her professional music career in 2018, shortly after making the life-changing decision to quit her job as a digital marketer in January of that year. Later in 2018, she released her debut single, “Mr. Rebel,” which began to gain some attention in the media and online spaces. Her career, however, officially soared to global heights following her feature on fellow Nigerian artist Wizkid’s 2020 single, “Essence.”
The song became a massive international hit, peaking at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after a remix version featuring Canadian superstar Justin Bieber was released. Tems’ success quickly propelled her into the global music elite. By 2023, she had secured a milestone achievement, becoming the first female Afrobeats artist to win a Grammy Award. This historic win came from her collaboration with American rappers Future and Drake on the track “Wait For U,” which won the Best Melodic Rap Performance award at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
Continued international recognition and multiple awards
Tems’ streak of international recognition continued to define her career as she secured another major accolade in 2025. She won the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, cementing her status as a leading voice on the continent. This second win made her the only Nigerian artist to hold multiple Grammy Awards, showcasing her remarkable global appeal and critical acclaim.
Beyond her vocal performances and collaborations, Tems has also been recognized for her songwriting prowess in other major creative fields. She earned both an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for co-writing the acclaimed song “Lift Me Up.” The track was recorded by global pop icon Rihanna for the soundtrack of the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This diverse recognition across music and film underscores the extent to which Tems has surpassed her initial aspirations.
Looking ahead to what the Lord has in store
The singer’s reflection on her achievements provides insight into her current mindset, suggesting a focus on artistic and spiritual evolution rather than mere chart-topping goals. Tems’ journey, from a working professional to a global music icon with multiple Grammys, offers a powerful testament to her talent and the global influence of Afrobeats music. With the accomplishments of her “dreams” already secured, Tems appears focused on embracing the next chapter of her career, guided by faith and artistic freedom.
