Four convicted in OOPL cybercrime case, one remanded

The Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted four internet fraudsters arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at a hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Vacation judge, Justice Deinde Dipeolu, delivered the verdicts on Friday after the convicts Ibrahim Azeez Olatunji, Isaac Akinwale, Habeeb Oladipupo Oshundairo, and Bisiriyu Roqeeb Abiodun pleaded guilty to various cybercrime offences. They were sentenced to jail terms ranging from one month to three months, with options of fines, and in one case, community service.
The four were among 93 suspected internet fraudsters arrested by the EFCC during an August 10 sting operation at a hotel pool party, where the suspects were allegedly celebrating fraudulent exploits. The EFCC had announced plans to arraign 23 of them in the first batch, but only 21 appeared before the court on Friday. Due to time constraints, only five cases were heard.
Olatunji, who posed as “Camila” online, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment or a N500,000 fine. Akinwale, who defrauded a victim of $500 by posing as “Monica” and “Daisy,” received three months’ imprisonment or a N1 million fine, with a Toyota Camry, mobile phones, and N400,000 forfeited to the government.
Oshundairo admitted to impersonation and retaining N600,000 in criminal proceeds, which he repaid. He was sentenced to 30 days of community service, during which he must carry a placard reading “Cybercrime Does Not Pay” under EFCC supervision. Abiodun, who impersonated “Sharon” to defraud a U.S. victim of $200, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment or a N500,000 fine, with his phone and restitution forfeited.
A fifth defendant, Onunoye Fawas Olamilekan, pleaded not guilty to impersonating “Nurse Becky” and retaining $50 from fraud. He was remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending trial on October 31, 2025.
