Clerics are taking over politics – Sule Lamido raises alarm

Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa State, has expressed serious concerns about the growing power of religious leaders in Nigeria’s political scene. He pointed out that clerics now play a significant role in influencing voters and shaping electoral outcomes, leading to a shift in the political dynamics.
Speaking during a condolence visit to Sheikh Yusuf Sambo Rigachikun in Kaduna, following the death of the cleric’s eldest son, Lamido shared his worries in a viral video. He lamented that religious leaders had become dominant figures in the political arena, with politicians now sidelined while clerics take charge.
“Despite the blessings of being religious leaders, clerics are now struggling for power,” Lamido said, expressing his concern. He added, “Clerics are supposed to be guardians to politicians, but since they want power, we politicians have decided to step aside and watch.”
The former Foreign Affairs Minister further criticized the trend where religious leaders not only advise their followers but actively campaign for political candidates, instructing their congregations on who to support. Lamido warned that this undermines the democratic process.
“We are waiting for them to tell us who to vote for based on their wishes. For equity and justice, everyone ought to maintain their status in society,” he emphasized.
Lamido also raised the issue of divisions within both political parties and religious groups, stressing that unless unity is achieved, Nigeria’s political landscape will continue to experience turmoil.
