FG sets 16 as minimum admission age for tertiary institutions

The Federal Government has officially set age 16 as the minimum entry age for admission into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
This announcement was made on Tuesday, July 8, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the opening of the Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) held in Abuja.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the age limit is non-negotiable, warning institutions against flouting the directive. He stressed that any tertiary institution that admits candidates below the age of 16 will be acting illegally and will face consequences.
In addition, the Minister declared that all admissions must go through the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), warning that any admission conducted outside CAPS would be considered invalid. Institutions or individuals found engaging in such unauthorized admissions would be prosecuted.
He added that heads of institutions involved in admission fraud would also face legal action.
More details from the meeting are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
