FG confirms bird flu outbreak in Kano
On Tuesday, January 14, the Federal Government confirmed an outbreak of bird flu, also known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, in Kano State. The disease, which affects various bird species such as chickens, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys, has raised concerns about its spread in northern Nigeria.
Dr. Columba Teru Vakuru, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, issued a circular warning of the increased risk of transmission of the disease. The circular urged state veterinary offices and other relevant agencies to activate surveillance systems and implement strict biosecurity measures.
“We urge all state veterinary offices and relevant agencies to activate their surveillance systems immediately. Strict biosecurity measures must be implemented, and public awareness campaigns intensified to curb the spread of the virus,” the circular stated.
The outbreak was first suspected in December 2024 when a young man from Galadanchi quarters in Gwale Local Government Area purchased a duck from the Janguza market in Tofa LGA. After introducing the duck to his flock of chickens, the duck suddenly died, followed by the death of several chickens. The carcasses were taken to a veterinary clinic, where avian influenza was suspected.
Dr. Usman Gwarzo, Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria in Kano, explained, “Samples were sent for testing, and by the first week of January 2025, the results confirmed the presence of the virus.”
Gwarzo has urged residents of Kano to stay alert and report any unusual bird deaths to veterinary authorities to help control the spread of the disease.
