FG begins evacuation of Nigerians from Iran

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched an emergency evacuation exercise for its citizens currently trapped in the Islamic Republic of Iran. This move follows the escalating military tensions in the Middle East, which have made the continued stay of Nigerians in the region increasingly dangerous. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the first batch of evacuees is expected to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja within the next forty-eight hours.

Prioritizing the safety of Nigerian students

A large percentage of the Nigerians living in Iran are students pursuing higher education in various scientific and religious institutions across the country. The government has been in constant communication with the Nigerian embassy in Tehran to coordinate the logistics of moving these individuals to safety. Many of the students expressed relief at the news, citing the constant sound of sirens and the fear of being caught in the crossfire of retaliatory strikes.

The evacuation is being carried out using chartered flights as most commercial airlines have suspended operations in the region due to the threat to civil aviation. The Federal Government has promised to cover all the costs associated with the exercise to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind due to a lack of funds. This proactive measure has been praised by the families of the students who have been living in a state of constant anxiety.

Coordinating with the Iranian authorities

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the Iranian government has been cooperative in facilitating the necessary exit permits for the Nigerian citizens. Despite the domestic chaos, the diplomatic channels between Abuja and Tehran remain open and effective for the purpose of this humanitarian mission. The Nigerian ambassador to Iran is personally overseeing the screening and boarding process at the designated assembly points.

Authorities have urged all Nigerians still in the country to report to the embassy immediately to be included in the subsequent evacuation batches. They warned against attempting to travel to the borders of neighboring countries without proper guidance, as the land routes are currently highly unpredictable. The government’s priority is to move everyone through a controlled and secure air bridge.

Welcoming the citizens back home to safety

Preparations are already underway in Abuja to receive the evacuees and provide them with the necessary medical and psychological support upon their arrival. The National Emergency Management Agency has been tasked with setting up a temporary reception center to process the returnees and reunite them with their families. The government believes that bringing its citizens home is a non-negotiable duty in times of global crisis.

As the Middle Eastern conflict continues to evolve, the Federal Government remains on high alert to protect its citizens in other neighboring countries as well. They have issued a travel advisory urging Nigerians to avoid the region entirely until a formal ceasefire is achieved. For the returnees from Iran, the nightmare of living in a war zone is finally coming to an end as they touch down on Nigerian soil.
