Ex-Manchester City forward Robinho to serve nine-year sentence in Brazil

Former Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan forward has been sentenced to nine years in prison for rape, talkSport reports.

Robinho was allegedly involved in the gang-rape of a 23-tear-old Albanian while he was playing in Italy for Serie A giant AC Milan at the time. He was found guilty in 2017 by an Italian court, but he appealed, despite messages uncovered by the Police incriminating him completely.

He appealed the ruling, but in 2020 he lost the appeal and his sentence was upheld.

The Supreme Court of Cassation, the highest court in Italy, upheld his sentencing again in January 2022. At the time of the appeal, Robinho was in Brazil, and he could not be imprisoned because according to Brazil law, citizens cannot be extradited to a foreign country.

An international arrest warrant was put out by Italian prosecutors in February 2022. In 2023, the Italian government requested Brazil to order Robinho to serve his sentence in his home country, along with his friend who was also convicted in the same gang rape case.

This was possible because according to a new migration law in Brazil, citizens who are convicted abroad can serve their sentence in their home country, Brazil.

In February 2024, a Brazilian court scheduled for March 20 the ruling on Italy’s government’s appeal to have the original sentence executed in Brazil. The Brazilian court upheld the Italian court’s conviction, so Robinho will serve his nine-year sentence in Brazil.

Robinho insists the sex was “consensual”.

He was the first signing of the Manchester City owners when they took over the club in 2009. He joined AC Milan in 2010 after a torrid time at the Manchester club.
