Europa League: Chido Obi dropped from Man Utd squad for Real Sociedad clash

Manchester United striker Chido Obi has been dropped from the squad for their Europa League last-16 tie against Real Sociedad.

According to ESPN, United manager Ruben Amorim did not register Obi for the competition, making the 17-year-old ineligible for the upcoming match. Obi, who joined United from Arsenal in October, has made just three senior appearances so far.

Obi impressed as a substitute during United’s FA Cup elimination by Fulham on Sunday, sparking questions about whether he could soon earn his first start in place of struggling forward Rasmus Højlund. Højlund has not scored since December, raising doubts about his form.

However, despite his growing influence, Obi will not be available for selection in Thursday’s Europa League round-of-16 first leg in Spain. United instead added January signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven to the squad for the knockout rounds.

Obi’s omission from the Europa League squad comes as he was not considered a first-team player at the time of registration.
