Enugu government nullifies underage marriage, arrests parents and matchmaker

The Enugu State Government has annulled an underage marriage involving a teenage girl, Amarachi, and an adult man in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, following widespread outrage on social media.

The Commissioner for Gender, Women and Children Affairs, Hon. Ngozi Eni, said the government intervened after confirming that the illegal marriage had already been consummated. She noted that the state could not ignore a case that violates the Child Rights Law and exposes the girl to severe physical and psychological risks.

Eni said the ministry had earlier invited the families involved to explain why a minor was given out in marriage, but they failed to appear. This prompted the ministry to facilitate the arrest of all parties: Amarachi’s parents, the groom’s parents, the groom, and the matchmaker, identified as Mrs Patience, a native doctor.

During questioning, Amarachi revealed she was forced into the marriage and had never attended school. She also privately confirmed that she did not consent to the union. The groom’s mother said she arranged the marriage because her son was an only child but offered no explanation when reminded that marrying off a minor is unlawful.

The matchmaker claimed ignorance of the fact that child marriage is a criminal offence. Officials from the ministry’s legal unit briefed all parties on the Child Rights Law and penalties for violating it, while the Permanent Secretary and Head of Child Department educated them on gender-based violence and the health dangers of early marriage, including VVF and cervical cancer.

All suspects have been handed over to security authorities for further investigation. Amarachi and a two-year-old child whose mother has not been identified were taken into protective custody by the ministry.

Eni said the state would ensure Amarachi receives proper care, rehabilitation and access to education, stressing that the marriage will be completely nullified. She also appreciated the swift support of the Chairman of Igbo-Eze North LGA, Hon. Ogalla, the constituency’s House of Assembly member, and the Chairman of the Enugu State Civil Service Commission.
