Dr. Christopher Kolade, one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen and a paragon of ethical leadership, has passed away at the age of 92. His death was announced by his family in a statement released on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
“We are thankful for his incredible life of faith and service and are grateful for God’s abundant blessings,” the family’s statement read in part.
Dr. Kolade’s passing marks the end of a remarkable era defined by a commitment to public service, moral integrity, and national development.
Early life and academic background
Born on December 28, 1932, in Erin-Oke, Osun State, Christopher Kolade was the son of an Anglican missionary. He began his academic journey at Government College, Ibadan, one of Nigeria’s premier secondary schools. He later attended Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone, where he distinguished himself as an excellent student and a disciplined leader.
His academic achievements were later recognized with several honorary doctorate degrees, including from the University of Sierra Leone in 1976 and McPherson University in 2016.
A pioneering career in broadcasting
Dr. Kolade began his illustrious career in broadcasting, where he quickly rose through the ranks to become the Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). At a time when mass communication was becoming a major influence in national discourse, Kolade ensured that public broadcasting maintained a high standard of professionalism, accuracy, and ethical practice.
He was widely regarded as a voice of moderation and reason, using media as a tool for civic education and national unity.
Corporate leadership and diplomatic service
After his career in broadcasting, Dr. Kolade transitioned into the corporate world, where he left an indelible mark as Chief Executive and later Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc. Under his leadership, Cadbury was not just a leading brand, but also a model of ethical business conduct.
Kolade’s reputation for integrity later led to his appointment as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, a role he performed with distinction, helping to improve Nigeria’s diplomatic image abroad.
Educator and institution builder
Even in retirement, Dr. Kolade remained deeply committed to knowledge-sharing and nation-building. He became a highly respected lecturer at Lagos Business School (LBS), where he taught Corporate Governance and Human Resource Management. He also taught Leadership and Conflict Management at the School of Media and Communication (SMC), both under Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos.
He served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the university, shaping its policies and guiding its long-term vision.
Legacy in public service and civil society
Beyond education, Dr. Kolade held leadership positions in several professional and civil society organizations, including the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), the Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria, and the World Association for Christian Communication.
In 2012, former President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him as Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), where he once again championed transparency and accountability.
He also chaired the Integrity Organization Ltd GTE and The Convention on Business Integrity, two platforms dedicated to promoting ethical conduct in both public and private sectors.

Dr. Kolade was not just an accomplished professional; he was also a man of deep faith and moral clarity. He received numerous national and international recognitions for his contributions to ethics, communication, governance, and leadership. Notably, he was awarded the Order of St. Augustine Medal by the Archbishop of Canterbury—a rare honor for a Nigerian statesman.
