Egypt’s president welcomes Britain’s decision to recognise Palestine
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday welcomed Britain’s intention to recognise a Palestinian state in September if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza.
”It is a step toward advancing the two-state solution, tine,” said the Egyptian president on his official Facebook page.
“I highly value the statements made by Prime Minister of the UK, Keir Starmer, regarding the UK’s intentions to recognise the State of Palestine.
look forward to the UK taking this historic decision as soon as possible without restriction or preconditions,” Sisi added.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s longstanding position that a just and comprehensive resolution of the Palestinian issue is the only path toward achieving sustainable peace in the Middle East.
On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Starmer said that his nation would recognise the State of Palestine at a United Nations meeting in September unless Israel takes substantive steps to end “the appalling situation in Gaza”, agree to a ceasefire.
A week earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that France would officially recognise the State of Palestine during the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
