EFCC quizzes El-Rufai over N432bn fraud

Detained former governor faces long interrogation
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has taken its investigation into Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to a whole new level.
The former Governor of Kaduna State was reportedly detained on Monday night following several hours of intense questioning. The anti-graft agency is probing allegations of a massive N432 billion fraud linked to his eight-year administration.
This investigation stems from a detailed report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which accused the former governor of various financial crimes. These include the misappropriation of multi-billion naira loans and the breaching of due process in the award of contracts. The report claims that the “Urban Renewal” projects were used as a front for diverting state resources into private pockets.
Breaking down the N432 billion allegations
According to the ad-hoc committee of the Assembly, several loans obtained by the El-Rufai administration were not used for their intended purposes. They alleged that about N423 billion was mismanaged, leaving the state with an astronomical debt burden that will take generations to pay. The committee recommended the prosecution of the former governor and several of his key cabinet members.
Beyond the loans, the EFCC is also looking into the alleged diversion of N1.37 billion meant for a light rail project in the state capital. There are also claims that senior aides were involved in money laundering operations involving millions of dollars. El-Rufai has consistently maintained his innocence, describing the entire probe as a “political vendetta” orchestrated by his enemies.
Use of tear gas on protesters at EFCC office
As news of the detention spread, supporters of the former governor gathered at the EFCC headquarters to protest his treatment. The situation turned chaotic as security operatives used tear gas to disperse the crowd that had blocked the main entrance. The agency defended its actions, stating that the protesters were obstructing the “due process of law” and threatening public peace.
El-Rufai’s legal team has expressed concern over his health and his “illegal” detention beyond the constitutionally allowed period. They argue that the former governor honored the invitation voluntarily and should be granted bail immediately. However, EFCC sources claim that they need more time to verify some of the documents recovered during recent raids on his properties.
The wider impact on the Nigerian political scene
This high-profile arrest has sent ripples through the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where El-Rufai remains a powerful figure. Many of his associates believe that his current ordeal is a warning to other political heavyweights who might have “presidential ambitions” for 2027. The anti-graft battle is increasingly being viewed through a political lens, regardless of the merits of the case.
The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, has promised that the commission will be transparent and fair in its handling of the investigation. He urged the public to refrain from making “inflammatory” statements that could jeopardize the ongoing legal proceedings. Nigeria’s fight against corruption remains a long and difficult journey, but no one should be “unapproachable” by the law.
