EFCC insists it’s neutral
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that its investigations into opposition figures are politically motivated.
In a statement on Tuesday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stressed that the agency operates without bias, handling all corruption cases based on evidence—not politics.
“Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest, or partisan consideration,” Oyewale said.
Response to ADC accusations
The pushback comes after the ADC alleged that the EFCC targets opposition leaders with politically driven summons, often reopening old cases without fresh evidence.
The EFCC called the claims “self-serving” and “diversionary,” adding that corruption must be investigated regardless of timing or political context. The agency also revealed it is probing several high-profile figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including sitting governors and ministers.
“We belong to the people, not any party”
Oyewale reminded Nigerians that the EFCC is an independent body funded by taxpayers, not the ruling party. He urged political groups to focus on their own activities and allow the Commission to do its work without interference.
The agency also said it won’t be pressured into revealing details of ongoing investigations and urged the public to ignore statements aimed at “heating up the polity” or distracting from the fight against corruption.
