EEDC attributes recent drop in power supply to gas constraints

Electricity company addresses shortage, appeals for customer patience
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has officially confirmed that the recent widespread drop in power supply across its network is primarily due to severe gas constraints.
The company, through its spokesperson, addressed the mounting consumer frustration by explaining that the reduction in electricity supply is not a localized issue but a systemic problem stemming from the generation end of the power value chain. The company serves the entire South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
The EEDC clarified that the amount of electricity it can distribute to its customers is entirely dependent on the allocation it receives from the national grid. Since the national grid is currently receiving a significantly lower supply of power due to the gas shortages, all downstream distribution companies, including the EEDC, are compelled to implement load shedding. This means customers will experience longer periods of darkness.
The Nigerian power sector’s reliance on gas
The disclosure by the EEDC spokesperson underscores the critical reliance of the Nigerian power sector on gas-fired thermal power plants. These plants are responsible for generating the majority of the electricity fed into the national grid. When the supply of gas to these generation plants is disrupted or constrained, the overall national power output plummets drastically.
The current gas constraints are complex, often involving issues related to maintenance, pipeline vandalism, or challenges with payment and supply logistics. Regardless of the specific cause, the direct consequence is a failure to meet the energy demands of the nation’s populace and industries. The EEDC emphasized that until the gas supply to the generating companies improves, the inadequate power situation will persist.
Load shedding and its impact on consumers
The electricity distribution company explained that the current reduced allocation necessitates the implementation of a rigorous load-shedding schedule across its five operational states. Load shedding involves deliberately cutting off power supply to various areas for defined periods to balance the limited supply with demand. This measure, while necessary to prevent total system collapse, inevitably leads to significant inconvenience and economic losses for customers.
The EEDC appealed to its customers for patience and understanding during this challenging period of acute supply shortage. The company acknowledged the economic hardship and business disruption that the poor power supply is causing. However, the spokesperson reaffirmed that the issue is beyond the direct control of the distribution company, which can only distribute what it is allocated.
EEDC pledges to manage distribution equitably
Despite the limitations, the EEDC spokesperson assured customers that the company is committed to ensuring equitable distribution of the limited power it receives. The company’s technical teams are working hard to manage the load-shedding schedule fairly across its franchise area. This approach aims to prevent any single area from being unduly penalized by the massive reduction in supply.
The company also advised customers to manage their power consumption responsibly, especially during peak demand periods. This measure, while small, could help ease the pressure on the limited available power. The situation highlights the urgent need for long-term solutions to address the persistent challenges within the Nigerian power sector’s gas supply and infrastructure.
Call for urgent resolution by industry stakeholders
The statement from the EEDC serves as a public call for urgent intervention by stakeholders across the entire power value chain. Resolving the gas constraints requires coordination among gas suppliers, the generation companies, and the Federal Government’s regulatory bodies. The stability of power supply, the EEDC noted, hinges entirely on the swift restoration of full gas supply to the power plants.
The company promised to keep its customers updated on any improvements in the power allocation from the national grid. The ongoing crisis reinforces the need for Nigeria to diversify its energy generation sources to reduce its vulnerability to gas supply disruptions. Until that diversification happens, the nation remains susceptible to the crippling effects of such technical constraints.
