Editors guild urges probe into killing of Arise reporter

Nigerian editors call for justice in journalist’s death
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has condemned the killing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a reporter with Arise News, who was murdered during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, the Guild called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Guild mourns loss of dedicated journalist
The statement, which was jointly signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, described Somtochukwu’s death as a tragic loss to the journalism profession in Nigeria.
“She was a vibrant and committed journalist who gave voice to the voiceless,” the Guild noted. “Somtochukwu represented the future of journalism in Nigeria. Her untimely death is not just a loss to Arise News, but to the entire media industry and the nation at large.”
A reminder of growing insecurity in Nigeria
The NGE linked the murder to Nigeria’s broader security challenges, citing increasing incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, and insurgency across the country.
“The loss of this vibrant journalist to an armed robbery incident is a stark reminder of the dangers Nigerians face daily in their homes and on the streets,” the Guild said.
It emphasized that the deteriorating security situation has left many citizens — including professionals such as journalists — feeling vulnerable and unsafe.
Editors demand swift investigation and prosecution
The Guild urged security agencies to act quickly, not only to identify and arrest those responsible for Somtochukwu’s death but also to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“We call on the authorities to fish out her killers and ensure that they face the full weight of the law,” the statement added.
The Guild stressed that journalists play a vital role in democracy, and that their safety must be prioritized by the government.
Solidarity with Arise News and the journalism community
In its message of condolence, the Nigerian Guild of Editors expressed solidarity with Arise News, Somtochukwu’s colleagues, friends, and family.
“At this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with Arise News and the broader journalism community,” the Guild said. “We believe that her dedication and passion should serve as a reminder to journalists across the country to remain committed to excellence — even in the face of adversity.”
Honouring a journalist taken too soon
Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu was widely regarded as a rising star in the Nigerian media industry. Known for her commitment to ethical journalism and her ability to cover under-reported stories, she was seen by many as a voice for change.
The Guild concluded its statement with a prayer for the repose of her soul, describing her as “a talented journalist who died in her prime.”
The tragic incident has sparked renewed calls for improved protection of media practitioners in Nigeria, especially as threats to press freedom and personal safety continue to mount.
As of the time of reporting, security agencies had yet to issue a formal update on the progress of the investigation into her killing.
