Activist accused of making “false and inciting” statements
The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to human rights activist and Sahara Reporters founder Omoyele Sowore over a social media post calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal.”
In a letter dated September 7, the DSS demanded that Sowore delete the post from X (formerly Twitter), which was made on August 26, or face legal consequences.
DSS says post threatens national security
According to the DSS, the post contains “false, malicious, and inciting” claims that could spark public unrest and undermine national unity.
The letter, signed by Uwem Davies, Director of Legal Services at the DSS, warned:
“Failure to comply will compel the Service to explore all lawful means to protect national security and public order.”
Sowore accused Tinubu of lying about corruption
In the controversial post, Sowore—former presidential candidate and pro-democracy campaigner—accused Tinubu of deceiving Nigerians by claiming corruption no longer exists under his administration.
The DSS claims the statement triggered widespread anger online and has the potential to “incite public disturbance, disunity, and even insurrection.”
No official response from Sowore yet
As of now, Sowore has not publicly responded to the DSS ultimatum. He has a long history of clashing with Nigerian authorities, especially over issues related to free speech, government accountability, and civic activism.
