David James predicts Arsenal will fall short in Premier League title race

Former England goalkeeper praises Arsenal’s form but doubts their title-winning potential
Former England international goalkeeper David James has expressed doubts that Arsenal will win the 2025 Premier League title, despite their impressive start to the season.
The Gunners currently sit four points clear at the top of the table following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday. The result strengthened Mikel Arteta’s side’s position in the title race, especially after both Liverpool and Manchester City suffered unexpected defeats to Brentford and Aston Villa respectively.
With Arsenal now leading the pack, optimism among fans has grown that this could finally be the season the North London club lifts their first league title since 2004. However, James has poured cold water on those expectations, suggesting that Arsenal still lack the endurance to maintain their form over the course of an entire campaign.
Arsenal’s impressive form sparks new title hopes
Arteta’s men have been one of the most consistent teams in the Premier League this season, showing maturity and resilience that has eluded them in previous years.
Their defensive solidity, coupled with attacking flair led by the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Gabriel Jesus, has made them difficult opponents for any side.
The Gunners’ 1-0 win over Palace, secured through a well-taken goal and a disciplined defensive performance, further underscored their growing ability to grind out results — something critics often said they lacked in previous campaigns.
Despite this progress, James believes the title challenge will ultimately come down to experience and consistency — areas where other clubs still hold the edge.
David James: “Arsenal won’t win the title”
Speaking to Metro, the former Liverpool and Manchester City goalkeeper commended Arsenal’s progress but maintained that the Premier League trophy will likely end up elsewhere.
“I don’t think Arsenal will win the title if that’s an answer, even if they’ve started well,” James said.
“I think the likes of Man City, Chelsea, and Liverpool will go into the last weeks of the season — if not the last game — and possibly decide the title race. But it will be interesting with Arteta to see how he handles qualification for the Champions League while maintaining that top position in the Premier League, and I don’t think they’ll be able to do it.”
James had earlier predicted before the season began that Arsenal would suffer a decline and finish fourth, but he admitted that Arteta’s men have exceeded his expectations so far.
“It would be foolish to stick to my earlier prediction,” he added, acknowledging the club’s steady improvement. “They’ve shown they’re ready for something bigger, but I still don’t see them winning the league.”
Arsenal’s recent record raises expectations
Since Arteta took charge in 2019, Arsenal have evolved from a struggling mid-table side into consistent title contenders. They have finished second in each of the past three seasons, narrowly missing out to Manchester City each time.
This campaign, however, appears different. The Gunners have learned from previous title collapses and are showing greater composure in high-pressure matches.
Their tactical flexibility, improved squad depth, and ability to rotate effectively have allowed them to compete strongly on multiple fronts — including the UEFA Champions League, where they are also performing impressively.
Nonetheless, critics like James argue that Arsenal’s relative inexperience in sustaining pressure until the final weeks of the season could still prove decisive.
Rivals struggle as Arsenal surge ahead
While Arsenal have been climbing steadily, traditional rivals Liverpool and Manchester City have stumbled in recent weeks.
Liverpool’s loss to Brentford marked their fourth consecutive league defeat, a slump that has pushed them out of the top four and raised questions about their title credentials. Manchester City, meanwhile, have shown uncharacteristic inconsistency since returning from the winter break.
Chelsea, under new management, are also beginning to find form, and James believes the title race could come down to the wire between several clubs.
“The title race will go into the last few games,” he said. “City and Liverpool have too much experience to be written off, while Chelsea’s young squad is starting to gel. Arsenal will have to prove they can handle that pressure.”
Upcoming fixtures could define Arsenal’s season
Arsenal’s next Premier League game will be a tough away fixture against Burnley at Turf Moor, while Liverpool face Aston Villa at Anfield — a match that could reignite their season.
With the festive fixture period approaching, Arteta’s men will need to maintain momentum if they are to silence their critics and keep their title dreams alive.
The coming months promise to test Arsenal’s depth, mentality, and tactical resilience — and while David James may not believe they will lift the trophy, the Gunners’ growing confidence suggests they are more determined than ever to prove the doubters wrong.
