Court fixes friday for Nnamdi Kanu to open defence in terrorism trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled Friday for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to open his defence in the seven-count terrorism-related charge filed against him by the Federal Government.
The trial was adjourned to allow Kanu, who recently dismissed his legal team, to prepare to personally represent himself in the proceedings.
During Thursday’s hearing, Dr. Ikpeazu drew the court’s attention to the withdrawal of the former defence lawyers earlier that morning and appealed that Kanu be given time to gather his thoughts and prepare for his defence.
The prosecution team, led by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, did not oppose the request.
Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021, had earlier filed a motion he personally signed, listing 23 individuals — including serving governors, ministers, former governors, and security chiefs — as witnesses he intends to call in his defence.
He described them as vital and compellable witnesses and urged the court to grant him a 90-day period to open and conclude his case.
